Dealing With Stress Related Hair Loss

Thanks to Nutrafol for partnering with me on this post!

For years I struggled with managing stress, and it wasn’t long before I started noticing how this was impacting my hair. During stressful times such as applying to graduate school, losing loved ones, planning a wedding, or living in a pandemic, I saw increased hair shedding. I found myself feeling so frustrated by this, which of course added to my level of stress and continued the cycle. It’s taken many years to figure out how to deal with stress related hair loss. Here’s what I’ve tried and learned -

MANAGE YOUR STRESS

Okay so this one is obvious – the first step to dealing with stress related hair loss is well, dealing with stress. Stress is our mind and bodies’ natural responses to situations our brain perceives as being threatening or dangerous. Emotion regulation is the ability to respond to stressful life experiences in a manner that is flexible to promote adaptive behaviors. This reduces our stress levels by allowing us to maintain awareness of stress triggers and use our words to express our emotions. Developing coping skills can significantly reduce the risk of future hair loss. Some ways you can practice emotion regulation include exercising, journaling, deep breathing, yoga, and mindfulness. Check out my recent blog post for more about Mindfulness Practices.

TAKE SUPPLEMENTS

I’ve partnered with one of my favorite hair care brands Nutrafol in this post. I discovered Nutrafol about a year ago while consulting with my dermatologist about treating stress related hair loss. I am so glad she recommended it to me because I have seen amazing results in such a short period of time!! It’s become a staple in my journey towards healthier and fuller hair. Nutrafol improves hair growth, strength, and thickness for women. The best part is that it is natural and 100% drug free. Nutrafol targets the 5 leading causes of hair loss including stress, hormones, environment, metabolism, and nutrition. I took their short hair wellness quiz to determine the factors most affecting my hair and the products that would best meet my hair needs. See my results below! During my morning routine, I take two of the Nutrafol Women’s capsules and then during my nighttime routine I take two more. To complement my hair growth, they’ve also created boosters that aim at supercharging my hair regime. I cannot say enough about how amazing and effective these products are! Nutrafol is offering all my readers $10 off their first subscription!

HAIR MASK

I love doing a hair mask once a week! I usually create my own using a few drops of warm castor oil and aragon oil and gently massaging the oil into my scalp. Other hair treatments I love using are Gisou's Honey Infused Hair Oil. I like to let the oil sit overnight before washing it. Massaging the scalp is shown to improve blood flow and encourages hair growth. Doing a hair mask just once or twice a week can lead to shinier, healthier, stronger hair!

LASER COMB

This is another product that my dermatologist also recommended I try! It’s a laser comb that uses laser technology to target the scalp to stimulate hair growth. I usually use mine after a shower or while I’m watching tv on clean hair! What I love about this product is that it is cordless so I can really be anywhere and do my hair routine. The HairMax Laser Hair Growth Comb Ultima 9 Classic has been shown to regrow hair in as little as 3 to 6 months!

TAKEAWAYS

There you go, that’s everything that I have tried and loved on my journey to healthier hair! Stress related hair loss can be well, stressful, so be kind to yourself! Practicing emotion regulation skills is essential for dealing with stressful life experiences and promoting positive hair health. Hair regrowth can take a very long time, so be patient and most importantly consistent with your routine! Remember to consult with your physician if you are struggling with hair loss!
